MKT anchors for seismic and dynamic loads – proven safety for demanding applications

In modern fastening technology, seismic and dynamic loads represent extreme actions that require special consideration. Seismic loads are caused by earthquakes and result in transient shaking of short duration and hardly predictable intensity. To support earthquake-resistant construction, MKT has, at an early stage, tested and assessed all their relevant fastening systems accordingly. For this, mechanical and chemical anchors used in the design of structures and attached components that are subjected to seismic actions, are qualified in accordance with the European Assessment Documents EAD 330232 and EAD 330499.

Dynamic loads, on the other hand, act over varying periods of time and arise from repeated vibrations, for example due to machine-induced oscillations. With the EAD 330250, a dedicated European Assessment Document is available under which anchors must undergo extensive testing and qualification when subjected to fatigue-relevant loading. For these demanding applications, engineers can rely on the European Technical Assessments (ETA) for the MKT bonded expansion anchor VMZ dynamic and the expansion anchor BZ3 dynamic, enabling safe design under seismic and dynamic loading conditions.

The BZ3 dynamic and VMZ dynamic anchors have already proven their performance in a wide range of demanding projects. A prominent example is their use in the Filder Tunnel project of Deutsche Bahn.Due to the high-speed trains that will operate in the tunnel, alternating pressure and suction forces occur, subjecting the fastening systems to continuous fatigue-relevant loads. Therefore, it is essential to verify sufficient fatigue resistance for the anchors used. In addition to fastening tunnel installations such as doors and railings, the BZ3 dynamic and VMZ dynamic are particularly suitable for applications involving dynamic loads. These include, among others, the fixation of industrial robots, crane rails, elevator guide rails, noise barriers, and bridge structures. The European Technical Assessments (ETA-12/0117 and ETA-17/0194) also confirm their suitability for seismic actions in categories C1 and C2, underlining the high performance of these systems even under extreme conditions.
