On 2 October 2025, Metall-Kunststoff-Technik GmbH & Co. KG (MKT) officially inaugurated its new production facility in Weilerbach – in the presence of the Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate, Mr. Alexander Schweitzer.
A particular highlight of the event was the presentation of the Platinum Certificate by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), handed over by Dr. Stephan Anders: “A strong signal for sustainable construction in the industrial sector. Platinum, the highest level of distinction for sustainable building, has so far been awarded to only very few production facilities. What makes this distinction remarkable is that no other production building in Germany has yet achieved a score of 85.6 percent.”
The DGNB certification system evaluates construction projects comprehensively over their entire life cycle – from planning to operation. To date, around 10,000 buildings have been certified. At the core of the evaluation are three equally weighted sustainability categories:
-
Environmental quality – conservation of resources and protection of the environment
-
Economic quality – consideration of life-cycle costs and value stability
-
Sociocultural quality – promotion of user health and well-being
In addition, technical quality, process quality, and the site itself are assessed. Together, these factors create a holistic picture of a building’s actual sustainability throughout its entire life cycle.
MKT’s new production building meets the highest standards – from the use of particularly low-emission and durable materials to low energy consumption, ample natural daylight, and excellent indoor air quality. The consistent installation of heat recovery systems on all production machines reduces energy demand to an absolute minimum. As a result, nearly all of the electricity generated can be used directly to power the machinery. If the waste heat from the machines is no longer sufficient in winter, two relatively small heat pumps are available to temper the building’s floor slab using a 50 km piping system. Supply temperatures of just above 20°C are enough to ensure uniform, draft-free heating throughout the building. According to the “Framework for Climate-Neutral Buildings and Sites,” the building’s operation is therefore climate-neutral.
This means that MKT is already taking a major step towards aligning its entire production with climate-neutral standards.
In his speech, Mr. Bernd Herrmann, member of the Würth Group’s corporate management, emphasized the significance of the certification for the Würth Group: “MKT has the most sustainable production building in Germany.” With its new facility, MKT not only sets a strong example for sustainable construction but also for long-term and responsible growth within the Würth Group.
We are proud of this recognition and look forward to contributing to a more sustainable future with our new production building.
